During a corporate carve-out, the client faced the loss of seven years of historical financial data, which was legally required for compliance and auditing. This data was housed in an ERP system that would no longer be accessible post-transition.
The inability to migrate the dataset to a new ERP instance due to cost and technical constraints created an urgent need for an alternative solution. Without access, the client risked regulatory non-compliance and operational inefficiencies. A robust and scalable solution was essential to preserve data integrity and provide a secure access for ongoing business needs.
Initially, an API-driven extraction strategy was planned to pull data from NetSuite into a SQL database. However, firewall constraints necessitated a change to a manual CSV-based data migration. Over 40 subsidiaries’ datasets were mapped, normalised, and consolidated into a structured SQL database.
A Power BI front end was developed, enabling the client to analyse historical data efficiently. The largest subsidiary’s dataset was segmented for optimal performance.
The approach ensured flexibility, with iterative refinement made during testing to maintain accuracy and accessibility. The solution was implemented within the client’s existing infrastructure, leveraging familiar tools to streamline adoption.
The project successfully preserved over seven years of financial data, consolidating over 5-million-line items into an accessible SQL database. The custom-built Power BI interface enabled seamless data analysis across subsidiaries. Despite mid-project technical challenges, the team adapted swiftly, ensuring continuity and compliance.
The solution not only met regulatory requirements but also provided a scalable framework for future data management. The client recognised the database and Power BI integration as critical to maintaining business operations post-carve-out.
